Wines - Orange

Orange wines are made from white grapes, that have spent a prolonged period of time on the grape skins. Typically, white wines are taken off the skins fairly soon after they are crushed.

This extra time spent on the skins affects the character of orange wines. The grape skins contain tannins, colour and of course flavour, so the resulting wine often has greater intensity of body and flavour in comparison to what you would expect from a white wine. 

Funnily enough, the longer the grapes spend on the skins, doesn't necessarily make the resulting wine a darker colour. After a few months, the colour of an orange wine on the skins begins to get lighter. So you will see that an orange wine that has spent more time on the skins can take on the kind of golden colour you might expect from a white wine.
